The Encyclopedia of Poison has its origins in
researching ways women protested their assigned role within society. I stumbled upon the stories of female poisoners—supplying other women with poison to escape forced marriages, some killing up to 600 men.
This handbook replicates a guide to accessible poisons for a housewife, with complete encyclopedic entries. If one takes a closer look, they might discover stories of historical female poisoners hidden between the pages—quite literally.
The illustrations are handdrawn in two distinctly different styles. There are 30 in total, spread over different layouts. 22 were inspired by 18th century botanic illustrations. The other 8 illustrations depict historic female figures tied to poison.
The book is bound by hand with hidden pages meant to be cut open to reveal their contents.
