“Roots” aims to visually depict the passing of time by tracing the history of human language. Many words describe core concepts of humanity and are rooted in one of the earliest languages: Proto-Indo-European, dating back to about 4500 BCE to 2500 BCE.
Through this book, you will be able to walk through time, following the beginning of "*dwóh", discovering how it changed over time to not only morph into the word “two” we know in the English language, but in hundreds more.
Each language group has its own colour. Whenever a language stops developing into new languages, a knot is tied and the thread is cut. The loose threads at the end are meant to symbolise the ever-changing characteristics of human language. The loose threads at the beginning mark the uncertainty what was before Proto-Indo-European. The book can also be opened from the back to discover the actual words for “two” in each respective language that is recorded on the front side of the book.
